Ethanol Fuel

E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. A clean-burning fuel, it is being touted by President Bush and others as the best hope against foreign oil dependence but will require major investments in infrastructure and large parcels of land for corn production. Critics say it takes too much energy to grow corn and turn it into alcohol and that E85's are less fuel-efficient than gas-run vehicles. About 1.56 gallons of E85 gets a vehicle about as far as one gallon of gasoline.
Detroit automakers say they will double their production of vehicles capable of burning ethanol to 2 million by 2010. About 5 million flex-fuel vehicles have been sold in the United States. Most fueling stations are in the Midwest. Many who have purchased flex-fuel vehicles are unaware that they have the option to fuel with E85.
