Compressed Natural Gas

Hailed by the Environmental Protection Agency as the cleanest internal combustion car ever tested, the Honda Civic GX went on sale in April as the only natural gas-powered vehicle available to retail customers. When burned, natural gas produces little more than small amounts of carbon dioxide and water vapor. GX can be refueled at home with a special device, and GX owners are eligible for tax credits. CNG does not quite get the mileage gas does, though, and it's non-renewable. Larger-scale acceptance would require major retooling of cars and infrastructures.

Natural gas is about 30 percent less expensive than gasoline when bought at a refueling station, and about 65 percent cheaper than gas when supplied by a home fueling appliance, available in nine states. GX's aimed at those who have standard commutes and who are able to refuel at the same station each trip.
