RESEARCH PAPER ACTIVITY GUIDELINE

1. To familiarize yourself with your topic, read an article in a general encyclopedia (Americana, Britannica, etc.) Do not use as a source in your paper. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

2. Read material on reserve in the UTEP Library on your topic(s). Make brief 3x5 card notes--summaries, paraphrases, and very brief quotations. Put bibliographic material on the back of one card and identify and number each card in the set. Record author(s), title(s), editor, edition, volume, publisher, city, date, and page number(s). This will be one of your eight required sources from the UTEP library. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

3. Check out a book on your subject or a related subject from the UTEP Library. Browse the catalog using keywords and subjects. Go to the stacks and consult the table of contents and index. Look at books nearby. Check out at least one book and make 3x5 cards for your research paper. This will be one of your eight required sources. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

4. Consult at least one reference book (other than a general encyclopedia) in the reference section of the UTEP Library. Make 3x5 card notes. This will be the third of your eight required sources. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

5. Consult at least one scholarly journal on your topic (or a related topic) from the UTEP PAPER collection. Make 3x5 card notes. You now have four of your required sources. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

6. Consult at least one scholarly journal on your topic (or a related topic) from the UTEP electronic data base. Make 3x5 card notes. You now have five of your required sources. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

7. You may choose at least three other sources from the UTEP Library collection, including reserves, reference works, books, and magazines. Make 3x5 card notes for each. DO NOT BEGIN WRITING YOUR PAPER YET.

8. Once you have 3x5 cards completed for your eight required sources, you may begin writing your paper. You may also gather more sources, if you wish. These additional sources need not be from the UTEP Library.
