WHAT WILL I BE LEARNING IN THIS CLASS?
The main emphasis will be placed on academic writing and research. Emphasis will be placed on collection strategies, overall essay and research paper organization, the use of supporting detail and methods of development, and the appropriate use of sources to produce compositions and research papers that are organized, coherent, and cohesive. You will also learn various methods of research and the various styles of citation.

DO I NEED ANYTHING ELSE?
You will need:at least five 8 1/2" x 11" manila folders
1 package of 100 3" x 5" index cards
what are the requirements for this course?
You will turn in a series of assignments leading to the research paper as outlined in the tentative schedule. All work must be your own. See the ESL Program Policies and Rules sheet about cheating and plagiarism. All assignments must be turned in on the date scheduled. No late work will be accepted. Good attendance and coming to class on time are also required. Absences and tardiness will affect your grade. Your instructor may also require that you go to ELLIS lab to practice English. This work will be considered as homework.
HOW WILL I BE GRADED?
You will write a series of assignments that provide essential information and/or exercises for understanding the nature and purpose of research papers and a research paper. All assignments must be completed and turned in on the scheduled dates. No late work will be accepted. All work must be edited and revised. All assignments with more than 12 errors (grammar, spelling, mechanics, format, etc.) per page will not be graded. They will be returned to you to revise and edit. If there is no significant improvement (less than 12 errors per page), you will receive an "F"
on the assignment. You will take a final exam requiring you to write an essay. You must pass the final exam with a score of 75% or better to pass the class. Your essay must show mastery of essay organization and development and have few problems in vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics.
You must also maintain a passing class average to pass the course with a "C" or better. If you receive a "D" or "F," you must retake the course.
Grades will be calculated as follows:
Research Paper 50%
Assignments 25%
Final Exam: 25%
The departmental grading scale is as follows:
A=90-100 D=60-69
8=80-89 F= 0 - 59
C=70-79
