ESOL 1312 Grading Criteria
Rate the essay using the following categories:
S = Superior A = Acceptable U = Unacceptable
□ ORGANIZATION
Student demonstrates the ability to write an organized essay using one of the modes required by the topics: classification, process, comparison/contrast, cause/effect. The essay has a clear, precise, thesis statement or central idea, an effective introduction, specifically developed and detailed middle paragraphs, and an effective conclusion.
□ DEVELOPMENT
Middle paragraphs have clearly stated topic sentences which are developed through several levels of specification using examples, definition, cause-effect relationships, and other rhetorical strategies. Writer uses appropriate transitional words and phrases to provide coherence.
□ GRAMMAR & MECHANICS
Student consistently and with few exceptions uses standard English word usage,
grammar, sentence structures, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. [Five or
more errors per page would be unacceptable.]
Student avoids major sentence errors: comma splices, run-on sentences, and sentence fragments. [Two or more major sentence errors per page would be unacceptable.]
ESSAY MUST RATE “ACCEPTABLE” OR “SUPERIOR” IN ALL CATEGORIES TO BE PASSING.
