INSTRUCTOR'S POLICIES

1. Computers

A. All essays written outside of class must be word-processed.

B. Students must get an e-mail account (available free of charge at LACIT or ATLAS).

2. Attendance [Also see Dept. of Language and Linguistics policies ]

 Satisfactory attendance is a course requirement. For the purposes of this course,

satisfactory and unsatisfactory attendance are defined as follows:

 * The student must be present in the classroom throughout the entire class period.

Excessive tardiness or leaving the classroom early will be considered unsatisfactory

attendance.

* The student must come to class prepared. Assigned texts should be brought to class

and out-of-class assignments already prepared. In class, students are expected to be

alert, attentive, and focused on the subject at hand. If a student's preparation is

unsatisfactory, his/her attendance will be considered unsatisfactory.

3. Deadlines

      A. All out of class essays and assignments are due at the beginning of the class period of the due date.

Your instructor is not obliged to accept late work. In-class assignments are due as directed or at the end of the class period.

B. Students who must be absent are responsible for finding out what was covered and

assigned in class in order to be prepared when they return to class. Make-up work is at the discretion of the instructor.

4. Academic Integrity

Plagiarism (stealing someone else's ideas or writing) or any other type of academic

      dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cases of plagiarism will be reported to the Dean of Students.

5. Grading : (See Syllabus)

FORMAT FOR WRITTEN WORK: Out of class Major Essays will be typed or word processed, double spaced. Other in-class written work will be word processed when class meets in LACIT or in the class room written legibly in blue or black ink, double spaced, on one side of white 8 ½ X 11" lined paper.

DRESS AND CLASS COMPORTMENT: Students are expected to dress appropriately for class. This instructor finds hats distracting while he is teaching; therefore, he will ask you not to wear them during class or lab meetings. Since this is a course which teaches that "audience" is an important part of communication, students wearing clothing with written messages that are not in good taste (that is, messages one would not say or want someone else to say to his or her mother) will not be allowed in the classroom, and the student will be asked to leave class and will be counted absent.

            All persons are expected to conduct themselves in a pleasant, civil, courteous, and sociable manner at all times. Rudeness, bigotry, sarcasm, and obscene or abusive language will not be tolerated, and students displaying such behavior will be required to leave class and will be counted absent. Objectionable behavior will be reported to the appropriate dean.

            This instructor fully supports Affirmative Action and EEO compliance, and for this reason he will not tolerate displays--written, verbalized, or acted upon--of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual preference, or age related bigotry. Written work containing obscene or abusive language or blatant bigotry of any kind will not be accepted, and a grade of "F" will be entered into the record for that work.

CELL PHONES, BEEPERS, AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES: Unless your job or life circumstances require you to be on call during class times, please turn off your cell phone or beepers. If you must have your phone or beeper on during class, please let the instructor know when and why before class starts. CD and tape players (with or without headphones) are not allowed. Electronic dictionaries are allowed; games are not.

FOOD AND DRINK: No food will be allowed in class. Bottled water is OK.

SCHEDULE & ASSIGNMENT CHANGES: The schedule of readings and assignments is a plan, not a contract. Reading and journal assignments may be changed as the instructor sees fit in the best interest of class participation and learning.
