Project Lead

In the Fall 2012 semester, I had Dr. Char Ullman and Dr. Elena Izquierdo of The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)’s College of Education Department of Teacher Education come to my class to present their Project LEAD initiative. Project LEAD stands for: Leadership in English Acquisition, Academic Achievement, and Development and is a five-year grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education to,

among other things, improve the education of English Learners (ELs) in El Paso’s Socorro Independent School District. The women needed a logo for the project and in the end, the five best student designs went to Drs. Izquierdo and Ullman to select the final winner. Student Francisco Melendez’s design was ultimately chosen and used not only for their logo, but also to adorn the glass doors of the initiative’s office space.
