The Bridge recognizes that the arts are often able to reach youth that are not reached by traditional school methods. Given our past affiliation with both the El Paso and Ysleta I.S.D as well as collaboration with the El Paso Arts Resources Department "Arts in Education" program, we believe we are extremely well situated to develop arts projects that will have an impact on the quality of art education in the area.
We are in the process of implementing the following ART-CADE Projects:
· Create a space (1500 sq. feet) with a small video theater cinema, computer labs (resource center with 12 pc's) to be used primarily for digital video editing and educational software, an arts studio, and a music room. He have networked 8 computers and designed a web page with the help of UTEP Interns.
· Hire some of El Paso's finest artists to carry out workshops. Because
the Bridge Center attracts some of the most outstanding local and international
artists in the visual, performing and literary arts, we believe that we can
make a real impact on setting high artistic standards for our presentations.
Following is a tentative list of the artists and workshops:
Percussion Karuna Warren, (New World Drummers),
Art and Sculpture Cesar Ivan (painter), Susan Stockwell (art educator)
Video making Robert Holgu in (filmmaker), Steve Osborn (cinematographer)
Jazz Improvisation The Art Lewis Youth Orchestra- Art Lewis
Dance workshops for youth Lorrain Portillo (middle eastern), Havana Twins
(afro-cuban)
· Invite published writers to read their children's books and poetry. We currently have scheduled writers such as Joe Hayes author of Done Esta El Cucuy, Alejandrina Drew (Abra Cadabra Patas de Cabra), and Ben Saenz (La Abuelita Fina). The readings will be held in the Bridge Cafe performance space.
· Continue the weekly chess tournaments by the El Paso Scholastic Chess league. The events currently attract between 50-100 school children every Saturday. We are providing activities like painting, and computer access.
· Create an "art park" in the alley next to the Bridge Cafe complete with murals, plants, and a performance space for special events as a space for the arts. We will involve the youth in creating murals and the performance area. The muralists for the project will be selected by the Bridge artist selection committee based on artistic quality of previous work.
· Train and hire docents for the Gloria Osuna Perez sculpture/painting installation, Madre Cosmica. The artwork is based on Aztec mythology and depicts ten women from the Southwest who have contributed to Hispanic history. It is an excellent exhibit to educate young people about art and culture. Our plans include two-hour workshops during which students will have an in-depth presentation and discussion of the installation. The discussion will be followed by a hands-on workshop conducted by an El Paso artist.
