Since its inception in 1985, the Bridge Center for Contemporary Art has a
demonstrated record for holding literary events including readings, seminars,
workshops, literary/visual artist collaborations and other literary events
of high artistic quality. A few of the authors who have recently read at the
Bridge Center include Abraham Verghese, Ben Saenz, Denise Chavez, Jimmy Santiago
Baca, Janine Pommy Vega, Bobby Byrd, Benjamin Alire Saenz., Luis Alberto Urrea,
Willivaldo Delgadillo and Joe Somoza. The large majority of these authors
have received critical acclaim for their work both locally and nationally
.
Writers at the Bridge is an eclectic mix of international, national, regional
and "emerging local" writers reading their work live. Recent writers
have included memoirist poet and novelist Eileen Myles, journalist and novelist
John Ross, Native American poet Simon Ortiz, among others.
Events upcoming in the immediate future can be found on our schedule.
Each author is designated interview and excerpts from their work in the Bridge Review, a tabloid journal dedicated to promoting the arts on both sides of the border with a 10,000 copy distribution.
The Bridge has a bookstore where the publications of the invited authors
are sold. The project joins forces with other schools, community colleges,
cultural centers and UT El Paso to bring the largest audience possible for
the writers. Because of the isolation of El Paso from other large cities,
programs that bring authors from the outside on a regular basis are not currently
available. Finally the Bridge Center's attracts an incredibly diverse audience.
