Assignment 2 is to reproduce as closely as possible (using Finale) the first system of Haydn's Symphony No. 104 in D Major (page 353 in the Dover edition):
  1. In Finale 2000 or newer, you should begin with the Document Setup Wizard. Select only the instruments that appear on this score.
  2. Use the Page Setup Tool to increase the size of the left margin.
  3. Use the Staff Attributes Tool to edit and position staff names so that they are identical to the original.
  4. Use Speedy Note to enter the notes. Since many instruments play in unison or octaves, you can use the Selection Tool (formerly Mass Mover) to copy and paste from one staff to another.
  5. Transposition is a problem. In Finale 2011 and older, transposition in under Staff Attributes. In Finale 2012, transposition is in the Score Manager, which is in the Window menu.
    • The Clarinetti require transposition in A, but this score displays the incorrect key signature. It is possible to reproduce the incorrect key signature in Finale, and maintain the correct transposition for playback. To do this, under transposition, select "Other." For Interval, enter "2." For Key Alter, enter "0."
    • The Trombe in D require transposition to D, which is available through the Staff Attributes dialog box. However, the Corni in D require a different transposition (up a minor 7th, not down a major 2nd). To do this, under transposition, select "Other." For Interval, enter "6." For Key Alter, enter "-2."
  6. In Staff Attributes, turn off "Key Signatures" under "Items to Display" for the Corni, Trombe and Timpani.
  7. Use the Text Tool to edit the title and movement number, if necessary.
  8. Use the Score Expression Tool to enter tempo, dynamics and "zu 2."
  9. Use the Smart Shape Tool to enter slurs and ties.
  10. Use the Articulation Tool to enter staccato markings and fermatas.
  11. If you need help using Finale, please drop by Dr. Leinberger's office during office hours or make an appointment. Also, some questions can be answered through e-mail.
