Assignment 5 is to orchestrate your composition for woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, F horn and bassoon):
- In Finale 2000 and newer,
- Go to the File menu and select New, select Document With Setup Wizard
- In newer versions of Finale, you will see the "Document Setup Wizard - Select and Ensemble and Document Style" dialog box.
If the ensemble you want isn't there, follow the steps below to create it.
- From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Woodwinds."
- Select the following instruments and click "Add" after each one: Flute, Oboe, Bb Clarinet and Bassoon.
- From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Brass."
- Select the following instruments and click "Add:" Horn in F.
- Under score order, click once on "Horn in F" and click the "up" arrow so that the order is: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Horn and Bassoon.
- Click "Next."
- Enter Tile, Composer and Copyright information.
- Enter Time Signature and Key Signature.
- Specify Tempo and Pickup Measure, if any.
- Once your template is complete, use the staff tool to group all five instruments together.
- In older versions of Finale,
- In Finale, go to the File menu and select Open (Ctrl+O).
- Find the Templates folder and open it. Find the Band folder and open it.
- In the Windows "Open" dialog box, under "Files of type:" you must choose "Finale Template File (*.FTM)" or "All Files (*.*)"
- Select "Woodwind Quintet.ftm"
- Use the Key Signature tool to set the key to the same as your composition.
- Use the Meter Signature tool to set the same meter as your composition.
- Use the Measure tool to add measure so that the quintet is sixteen measures.
How many additional measures you need varies, depending on your version of Finale.
- Use the Text tool to enter the title and your name.
- You may prefer to use the Staff tool to temporarily turn off the clarinet and horn transposition, so that you can view the score at sounding pitch.
You must remember to use the Staff tool to replace the transposition before extracting parts!
In Finale 2000 and newer, you can select "Display in Concert Pitch" from the Options menu.
- You may begin by copying (Ctrl+C) and pasting (Replace Entries, Ctrl+V) music from your solo and piano version to the quintet version using the Mass Mover tool.
Finale will adjust for differences in clefs.
- Now you have some decisions to make. You must find the best way to orchestrate your work for these instruments.
Use the Speedy Note tool to make your changes.
- Finale 2000 and newer can check the ranges of each part to see if they are practical.
In older versions, you need to do this manually. Ranges for all orchestral instruments are listed on pp. 386-390 of the Kennan/Grantham text (6th ed.).
- Print your score and parts and bring them to class to be performed.
Also, submit this assignment as an email attachment or on a floppy disk or other media.
