Assignment 7 is to orchestrate your composition for saxophone quartet (Bb soprano saxophone, Eb alto saxophone, Bb tenor saxophone and Eb baritone saxophone):
  1. In Finale 2000 and newer,
    1. Go to the File menu and select New, select Document With Setup Wizard
    2. In newer versions of Finale, you will see the "Document Setup Wizard - Select and Ensemble and Document Style" dialog box. If the ensemble you want isn't there, follow the steps below to create it.
    3. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select Woodwinds.
    4. Select Soprano Saxophone, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone and Baritone Saxophone.
    5. Click "Next."
    6. Enter Tile, Composer and Copyright information.
    7. Enter Time Signature and Key Signature.
    8. Specify Tempo and Pickup Measure.
    9. The Staff Names will probably be outside of your printer's margins. You can move the staff over in Page Setup or insert a break between "Soprano" and Saxophone" in the Staff tool, so the names take up less space.
  2. Older versions of Finale do not provide a template for this ensemble. You must obtain a copy of the Saxophone Quartet template from Dr. Leinberger. Bring a floppy disk to his office and he will give you a copy.
    1. Open the template on your disk called "Saxophone Quartet.ftm"
    2. Use the Key Signature tool to set the key to the same as your composition.
    3. Use the Meter Signature tool to set the same meter as your composition.
    4. Use the Text tool to enter the title and your name.
  3. Use the Measure tool to add measure so that the quintet is sixteen measures. How many additional measures you need varies, depending on your version of Finale.
  4. In Finale 2000 and newer, you can select "Display in Concert Pitch" from the Options menu. In older versions, you can to use the Staff tool to temporarily turn off the all transpositions so that you can view the score at sounding pitch, and change the tenor and baritone saxophones into bass clef to avoid excessive ledger lines. You must remember to use the Staff tool to replace the transposition and clefs before extracting parts!
  5. You may begin by copying (Ctrl+C) and pasting (Replace Entries, Ctrl+V) music from your solo and piano version to the quintet version using the Mass Mover tool. Finale will adjust for differences in clefs.
  6. Now you have some decisions to make. You must find the best way to orchestrate your work for these instruments. Use the Speedy Note tool to make your changes.
  7. Finale 2000 and newer can check the ranges of each part to see if they are practical. In older versions, you need to do this manually. Ranges for all orchestral instruments are listed on pp. 386-390 of the Kennan/Grantham text (6th ed.).
  8. Print your score and parts and bring them to class to be performed. Also, submit this assignment as an email attachment or on a floppy disk or other media.
  9. If you need help using Finale, please drop by Dr. Leinberger's office during office hours or make an appointment. Also, some questions can be answered through e-mail.
