Assignment 8 is to orchestrate your composition for percussion ensemble (xylophone, marimba, snare drum, triangle, cymbal, bass drum and timpani):
  1. In Finale 2000 and newer,
    1. Go to the File menu and select New, select Document With Setup Wizard
    2. In newer versions of Finale, you will see the "Document Setup Wizard - Select and Ensemble and Document Style" dialog box. If the ensemble you want isn't there, follow the steps below to create it.
    3. In Finale 2000 (and maybe 2001), all of the following instruments are listed under "Percussion." In Finale 2002 and newer, from the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Pitched Percussion."
    4. Select "Timpani," "Xylophone," and "Marimba."
    5. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Percussion."
    6. Select "Triangle" and "Cymbals."
    7. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Drums."
    8. Select "Snare Drum" and "Bass Drum."
    9. Score Order should be "Orchestral."
    10. Click "Next."
    11. Enter Tile, Composer and Copyright information.
    12. Enter Time Signature and Key Signature.
    13. Specify Tempo and Pickup Measure.
    14. The Staff Names may be outside of your printer's margins.
  2. Xylophone sounds one octave higher than written. You may prefer to use the Staff tool to temporarily turn off the xylophone transpositions. You must remember to use the Staff tool to replace the transposition before extracting parts! In Finale 2000 and newer (and maybe in Finale 98), you may also select "Display at Concert Pitch" from the "Options" menu.
  3. Notating non-pitched instruments: Snare drum, triangle, bass drum and sometimes cymbal use a single-line staff with a neutral clef. When using Speedy Entry, however, you will see a five-line staff.
    1. Enter notes for the snare drum, triangle, bass drum and cymbals on the third line.
  4. Notating pitched instruments: You must adhere to the following limitations:
    1. Xylophone and marimba will only use two mallets each, not four.
    2. You may only use two timpani, each one tuned to a single pitch.
  5. You must find the best way to orchestrate your work for these instruments. Use the Speedy Note tool to enter the parts. You may want to use the xylophone for soprano and alto, and use the marimba for tenor and bass. It would be most effective if you did not use all of the instruments all of the time. Try to vary the texture of your work.
  6. Finale 2000 and newer can check the ranges of each part to see if they are practical. In older versions, you need to do this manually. Ranges for all orchestral instruments are listed on pp. 386-390 of the Kennan/Grantham text (6th ed.).
  7. Print your score and parts and bring them to class to be performed. Also, submit this assignment as an email attachment.
  8. If you need help using Finale, please drop by Dr. Leinberger's office during office hours or make an appointment. Also, some questions can be answered through e-mail.
