13 Scoring for Orchestra Chapters 10, 11, 12, 16, 19 No
This Final Project, one of three choices, is to orchestrate your composition for Small (Chamber) Orchestra (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 Bb clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 F horns, 2 Bb trumpets, 2 trombones, tuba, timpani, two other percussion, first and second violins, violas, cellos and basses):
  1. In Finale 2000 and newer:
    1. Go to the File menu and select New, select Document With Setup Wizard
    2. Enter Tile, Composer and Copyright information.
    3. From the "Choose Parts" or "Select Instruments" dialog box, select "Woodwinds."
    4. Select "Flute," "Oboe," "Clarinet in Bb" and "Bassoon."
    5. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Brass."
    6. Select "Trumpet in Bb," "Horn in F," "Trombone," and "Tuba."
    7. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Pitched Percussion." In Finale 2000 (and maybe 2001), some of the following instruments are listed under "Percussion."
    8. Select "Timpani," and two other percussion instruments, such as Snare Drum and Bass Drum or Cymbals and Triangle. The timpani may include up to four drums. See page 227 of Kennan/Grantham for ranges of commonly used timpani.
    9. From the "Choose Parts" dialog box, select "Strings."
    10. Select "Violin I," "Violin II," "Viola," "Cello" and "Double Bass."
    11. In Finale 2002 (and maybe in 2001) and newer, make sure the "Score Order:" is set to "Orchestral."
    12. Click "Next."
    13. In Finale 2002 (and maybe in 2001) and newer, Enter Time Signature and Key Signature. Next, specify Tempo and Pickup Measure.
  2. In older versions of Finale:
    1. Go to the File menu and select Open (Ctrl+O).
    2. Find the Templates folder and open it. Find the Orchestral folder and open it.
    3. In the Windows "Open" dialog box, under "Files of type:" you must choose "Finale Template File (*.FTM)" or "All Files (*.*)"
    4. Select "Small Orchestra.ftm" or "Chamber Orchestra.ftm"
    5. Use the Staff tool to delete the piano staves and bassoon 2. You will need to respace the staves (in the Staff menu) to eliminate the remaining space. You may also select all of the string staves and drag the sting staves up to fill in that space.
    6. You can add staves as well if you need more percussion. You might find it easy to simply change the piano staves to percussion staves. Use the Staff tool to change the staff name, clef, staff (single line) and notation style. Setting up the correct playback for those staves is more complicated, but can be done.
    7. Use the Key Signature tool to set the key to the same as your composition.
    8. Use the Meter Signature tool to set the same meter as your composition.
    9. Use the Measure tool to add measure so that the piece is sixteen measures. How many additional measures you need varies, depending on your version of Finale.
    10. Use the Text tool to enter the title and your name.
  3. For some instruments, you'll be using two layers. Put 2nd Flute, 2nd Oboe, 2nd Clarinet, 2nd Horn, 2nd Trumpet and 2nd Trombone in Layer 2. To do this, click on the small number "2" in the lower left corner and use Speedy Entry. Any notes in other layers will be shaded out.
  4. You may begin by copying and pasting music from your solo and piano version to the orchestra version using the Mass Mover tool. Finale will adjust for differences in clefs and transpositions.
  5. You will need to refer to previous assignments for specific details on scoring for the different families of instruments.
  6. You must find the best way to orchestrate your work for these instruments. Use the Speedy Note tool to make your changes. It would be most effective if you did not use all of the instruments all of the time. Try to vary the texture of your work.
  7. Finale 2000 and newer can check the ranges of each part to see if they are practical. In older versions, you need to do this manually. Ranges for all orchestral instruments are listed on pp. 386-390 of the Kennan/Grantham text (6th ed.).
  8. Print your score and parts and bring them to class to be performed. Also, submit this assignment on a floppy disk.
  9. Your score must include a title page and be bound. Your score should include the following double sided pages:
    • Cover: Clear plastic
    • Page 1: Title Page (right)
    • Page 2: Blank (left)
    • Page 3: First page of score (right)
    • Page 4: Second page of score (left)
    • Page 5: Third page of score (right)
    • Pages 6 and on: Fourth page of your score and on (left, right, etc.)
    • Back cover: Cardboard or plastic
  10. You will need to print multiple copies of some parts. You should print the following number of copies:
    • First Violins: 5 copies
    • Second Violins: 5 copies
    • Violas: 3 copies
    • Cellos: 5 copies
    • Basses: 3 copies
    • Percussion: 1 copy each
    • All others (woodwinds, brass): 2 copies each
