Attendance Policy

The following policies apply to 100% Face-to-Face courses:
  1. Upon entering the classroom, students will scan a QR code from the projection screen onto their phone or other mobile device. Students will be asked to enter a password, their first and last names, and answer one question about arriving on time. Each student should enter his or her name as it appears in Goldmine. Each unexcused tardy is counted as one half of an unexcused absence. Students attending a section in which they are not enrolled will be counted as absent.
  2. A student's final grade will be lowered for excessive unexcused tardiness and absenteeism.
    1. For a fall or spring semester class that meets once each week, the student's grade will be lowered one letter grade after the first 3 unexcused absences plus one additional letter grade for every 2 subsequent unexcused absences.
    2. For a fall or spring semester class that meets twice each week, the student's grade will be lowered one letter grade after the first 6 unexcused absences plus one additional letter grade for every 4 subsequent unexcused absences.
    3. For a fall or spring semester class that meets three times each week, the student's grade will be lowered one letter grade after the first 9 unexcused absences plus one additional letter grade for every 6 subsequent unexcused absences.
    4. For a summer class that meets five times each week, the student's grade will be lowered one letter grade after the first 4 unexcused absences plus one additional letter grade for every 3 subsequent unexcused absences.
  3. There are three types of absences:
    1. Excused absences include, but are not limited to, university-sanctioned functions with a letter from the Dean of Students Office (such as an out-of-town ensemble performance or NCAA sports event), a positive COVID test, COVID symptoms, probable COVID exposure, medical emergencies, hospitalization, military deployment, and severe weather conditions. Students may take quizzes and exams and submit assignments.
    2. Unexcused but reasonable absences include, but are not limited to, non-UTEP performances and travel, employment, and incarceration. Students may take quizzes and exams and submit assignments.
    3. All other absences are unexcused. Students may not take quizzes and exams nor submit assignments.
The following policy apply to 100% Online courses:
  1. Attendance will not be taken. Students who fail to keep up with online course content do so at their own risk.
  2. Students will be required to log into Blackboard. See the course syllabus for details.
