These are the minimum representative requirements to be showcased either through an audition

for entry, or Juries/Recitals to be performed for the Department of Music’s Piano Major Degree Programs, which include:


Piano Performance

Piano Pedagogy

Music Composition with Piano as Primary Instrument

and Piano Performance with an Emphasis on Jazz

I.  Entrance Audition


A. Candidates will be asked to perform one of the following major scales, two octaves, hands together, eighth-notes with a minimum tempo of a quarter equaling 60 beats per minute:

                        C Major

                        G Major

                        F Major

                        A Major

                        B-flat Major

                        F-sharp Major

                        a minor (harmonic)

                        d minor (harmonic)

                        g minor (harmonic)

                        e minor (harmonic)


B. Candidates will be asked to sight read a short passage of music.


C.  Candidates will be asked to perform three contrasting pieces from memory, which accurately portray facility behind the piano, including one from the five following categories:


1.  Technique.  One of the following exercises or similar exercises at the composer’s indicated tempo:

—Op. 100 (Twenty-five Easy and Progressive Studies)

—Op. 109 (Eighteen Characteristic Studies)

No Hanon will be accepted as a technique study

3.  Classical Era.

—Any fast movement from a Sonata
