RefWorks Guide

SET-UP AN ACCOUNT  & CREATE A FOLDER IN REFWORKS

(1)    Sign up for an individual account if you are a new user

(2)    Enter log-in name and password

(3)    At the RefWorks main screen, point to “Folders” and select “Create New Folder”from the pull-down menu. Name your new folder

(4)    Minimize your RefWorks window for later use

There are three ways to import bibliographic references into RefWorks:

(1)    DIRECT EXPORT  - This feature is available within several online database service providers including EBSCOhost, OCLC FirstSearch, CSA, ABC-CLIO, and JSTOR

(2)    SAVE citations as text file and import into RefWorks – The “Import” function of RefWorks should list the database service provider you are using in order for you to use this method of importing. Some examples are EBSCOhost, OCLC FirstSearch, CSA, Science Direct (RIS Format), ISI (Institute for Scientific Information), JSTOR, Emerald, ABC-CLIO, and H.W. Wilson

(3)    COPY and PASTE citations or manually enter information into RefWorks - Use for any database that doesn’t offer the features mentioned above (see instructions below). You can also import references from a Word document by manually tagging them. See instructions here. The import filter to use would be "RefWorks Tagged Format" and the database choice would be "Tagged".

The Business Source Premier (EBSCOhost) and JSTOR databases will be used in the following examples to illustrate how the system works. The other online database services we subscribe to that offer similar features will work roughly the same way.
