Cormorant Fishing

Wearing a unique attire worn in the past, fishermen skillfully control the cormorants birds to catch Ayu, (sweet fish) through the traditional way handed down from the past. A bonfire, hanging on the side of the boat, reflects beautifully on the surface of the Nagara river. This kind of fishing is held every year from May 11 to October 15 in both Gifu and Seki cities. On the day of our arrival to Gifu, (Oct 15) they were precisely getting ready to close the cormorant fishing season for the year. One of the authorities from Gifu City Hall along with the Mayor of the city treated us for an evening of fishing to celebrate his birthday with us. They kindly took care of the expenses of renting a boat and paid the fishermen to display their skills and exhibit their tradition to us. On that beautiful full-moon evening we all have dinner on the boats and enjoyed watching cormorant fishing’s intricate rituals.
