Transportation
Every type of transportation you can think of is used in Japan, from bicycles
to the Shinkansen (Bullet Train) one the fastest trains on earth: Nozomi (300 km per hour). The Shinkansen was
inaugurated in 1964 to coincide with the Tokyo Olympics. In all these years of operation, there has not been
one accidents related death on Shinkansen lines. They are currently developing a faster one (360 km per hour).
Trains operate according to a tight schedule, and arrive exactly on time. It takes only 2.5 hrs to cover 515.4
km between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka stations. Besides the Bullet trains a busy network of commuter and subway lines
weaves in and out of the larger cities. There are 38 subway lines operating in 10 cities in Japan—over 8 million
people use Tokyo’s subway system every day. Highways are also important links in the transportation system.
