Our second visit was to Gifu University. GU was inaugurated in 1949 in
accordance with a new system that incorporated the Gifu Teaching College and the Gifu Agricultural and Forestry
College—the two most prestigious faculties in this institution. Today, GU consists of 5 faculties: Education,
Regional Studies, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture. In the field of post-graduate education, courses
leading to master’s or doctor’s were established. The Faculty of Education has three Departments: Teacher
Training, Special Education and Lifelong Education. Undergraduate students in these Dpts. enroll in general
courses in Japanese Education, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Music, Art, Health and Physical education,
Technology, Home Economics English, Special Education, School and Lifelong Education. GU has academic exchanges
with 21 Universities in China, Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, Sweden, Brazil, England and the US
among others. It is presently undertaking researcher and student exchanges as a form of cooperation in the
field of education and research. In the USA, GU has established partnerships with San Diego State University,
The University of Utah and West Virginia. The University President is Toshio Kinjo and the Dean of the Faculty
of Education Yoshimi Sasaki.
