Background & interests

After completing an AB in German, I discovered Linguistics.  I received the first formal AM in Linguistics awarded by the University of Missouri-Columbia, and then completed the PhD in Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974.  I have taught linguistics (primarily topics in syntax) at a number of institutions, including the University of Iowa, the University of Wales, Bangor (UK) and the University of Arkansas (Little Rock). I also have held visiting scholar appointments in Linguistics at MIT and at Harvard University. I am currently Professor of Languages and Linguistics at The University of Texas at El Paso.

My research interests encompass a variety of topics in syntactic theory, bilingualism and computational linguistics. My publications appear in Linguistic Inquiry, Natural Language & Linguistic Theory, Journal of Linguistics, Syntax, Language, Linguistics, Lingua and other professional language & linguistic journals.  I am completing a book on introductory syntax to be published by Wiley-Blackwell.  At Pan American University, I was a member of the Language & Linguistics Research Center focusing on the study of bilingualism.  At UALR, I served as Linguistics Program Director and for a time as Chair of the English Department.  At Bangor, I was Part Two Course Tutor (Upper Division Director/Advisor), and served for a time as Deputy Head of Department.  At UTEP, I have served as Graduate Advisor, Undergraduate Advisor, and Linguistics Program Director.
