Reflective Journal Assignment--English 0310 Fall 2009
Directions for Reflection Journals
1. Each week, you will submit your Reflection Journals electronically as attachments to e-mail messages sent from your UTEP e-mail account.
a. Go into your e-mail account and select "new" to send a new message.
b. Enter your English 0310 instructor's e-mail address on the "To" line of the message. Your English 0310 instructor's e-mail address is williamson@sol.dk
c. On the "Cc" line, enter the following e-mail address: developmentalenglish@utep.edu
d. On the "Subject:" line, clearly identify the course, the day & time that your class meets, and which journal or journals you are sending. Example: Subject: English 0310, MWF 9:30, Reflection Journals 1a & 1b
e. To attach your typed journals, click on the "Attachments" button and browse for the file. Once you have found the file, click on the "Attach" button and wait for the file name to appear in the box titled "Current file attachments." Then hit "Close" to return to your message.
f. Send your e-mail message.
2. Use the name and numbers of the Reflection Journals as the titles of your journals. The titles should appear centered and double-spaced below your heading.
3. The heading for your Reflection Journals should appear against the left-hand margin of the text and be double-spaced. Do NOT use the header tool. Simply begin typing your heading as the first lines of your documents.
Your heading should contain your name, your English 0310 instructor's name, the course title, and the date.

Begin typing your response here..................................... MWF classes for Minimester Keeping a journal helps clarify ideas and improve the fluency of writing. Though different teachers will have their own grading standards, in most cases, they do not edit spelling or grammar errors when evaluating journals. Instead, a student’s journal entry will be evaluated on dedication and engagement. Friday, August 28--Reflection Journals 1a & 1b 1a. Why do you believe that you were tested into this class? 1b. Discuss the barriers that may interfere with your success in this class. Barriers may include financial problems; lack of support at home; difficulty in a specific subject matter such as writing, math, or reading; managing your time; or other obstacles that will make going to college difficult for you. How could your instructor or UTEP help?
Friday, September 4--Reflection Journals 2a, 2b and 3. 2a. How well do you like reading? Why? 2b. How will reading be important in your life once you graduate from college, both in your personal and professional life? Please give specific examples. 3. What are the qualities or skills of a successful college student? Which of these qualities would you like to improve in yourself?
Friday, September 11--Reflection Journals 4 and 5 4. What strengths do you have as a reader? How could you become a stronger reader? 5. When you find an assigned text difficult to read, what do you do to understand the information presented in the text?
Friday, September 18--Reflection Journals 6 and 7 6. How are you applying what you have learned in this class to your other classes? Please give specific examples. 7. How have your basic reading skills changed since the beginning of the course? Discuss all of the following skills that apply to you:
Friday, September 25--Reflection Journals 8 and 9 8. What do you think you have done successfully in your classes so far this semester? What reading strategies or study skills could you use to be even more successful during the rest of the semester.9. When you find an assigned text difficult to read, what reading strategies do you use to help you understand the information presented in the text?
Friday, October 2--Reflection Journals 10 and 11 10. How have you applied what you have learned in this class to your other classes? Please give specific examples. 11. How might you apply what you have learned in this class to a job or future profession? Please give specific examples.
Friday, October 8--Reflection Journal 12, 13a and 13b 12. How have your basic reading skills changed since the beginning of the course? Please discuss ALL of the following skills:
13a. What are the qualities or skills of a successful college student? Which of those qualities would you like to continue to work on? 13b. What strengths do you have as a reader? What reading skills do you plan to continue improving?
