What is Problem-based Learning? A successful learning environment Will the World Ever Be the Same?
|
Earth’s Tangled Web Everybody has seen it on TV. Tornadoes whirling out of the sky and leaving whole towns looking like piles of sticks. We have seen earthquakes that can shake the ground and turn homes and freeways into mounds of bricks and cement. And who can forget the images of the tsunami waves, a hundred feet tall, crashing down on villages and pulling people into the ocean? We have seen what these disasters can do to people, but what effects do these changes have on the environment? Everyday, environments change whether it is in your neighborhood or across the globe. Natural disasters are only some of the reasons that cause changing environments. Humans also impact their environments through deforestation, mining and land development. It is clear that environmental changes can impact your life no matter where you live. It can take a few decades or a few seconds. Whatever the change, chances are the ecosystems that once thrived in the area will never be exactly the same. What effects would a forest fire have on the animals and plants that live there? Would the results be the same if the trees were cut down by a logging company? Did the tsunami in Indonesia only affect ecosystems on land? Is there anything people can do to repair damaged ecosystems? |
