In the United States, technology advancements represent a great advantage for society in many aspects which years ago they were impossible to reach. Now, one of these advancements is found in medicine. The medical advancements through chemical combinations and drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, have brought great discoveries in favor to find a cure for certain illnesses or at least reduce their mortality levels. That is the main reason which drug legalization has been approved in medical research and a combination of chemical substances and illegal drugs have brought great results for a cure. Although it has a cure, I believe illegal drugs should not be approving, because if these drugs are legalized they will create some problems in society. So crime, addiction and economical costs are good reasons to avoid drug legalization from being approved. Many people think that drugs legalization will reduce crime in our society, and that it would stop drug dealers on the streets, but I think it will not stop crime at all. It is true that drug legalization should be a good possibility to reduce illegal drugs. The drug dealers profits will decrease and drugs will be cheaper. But, while cheap drugs are being sold, other places that sell drugs can be bought at a higher price, which depends on its quality. So, the crime will not stop because there are many drug dealers that will sell drugs for different prices whether they are legal or not. Also, if drugs become legalized, this problem will be a dangerous risk for children and young people. It would be dangerous, because if all illegal drugs are sold in stores like cigarettes or alcohol, those people can buy them. Although people in favor drug legalization argues that there will be a restriction on selling drugs to young people, is not a good choice, because they can rob or kill people for those drugs. Also, as children are in early stage of their lives, they will need help of their parents to make them understand that drugs are not good because they will continue destroying people in which it would create a dangerous addiction in children and young people.
Addiction is another reason to consider drug legalization a bad choice
for society. According to a survey, “the notion that drug use is
a personal choice and that people should have the right to whatever intoxication
and self abuse?”(Voth) This point does not guarantee the safety
of society. This argument just affects society. So, who is
able to prove that each person has the right of choosing drugs to use in
their life without any restriction just because they have the right to
make their own decisions? Really, it is wrong because drug addiction
as any other kind of addiction affects society in many ways. For
example, car accidents will be a good reason to avoid drug legalization
because what happens when drunk drivers are involved in those accidents,
as they just have to pay a fine or go to jail for short time. Now,
accidents caused by the drugs influence would be the same as drunk drivers
because the level of punishment would be the same, so intoxication and
drug abuse would not be a good argument to support illegal drugs.
Moreover, drug addiction should affect the health of the people.
Intoxication under drugs conditions causes death. So, people need
to consent what drugs effects have, but the most important of all is how
much money people will waste if drugs are legalized.
