Family Science NightsFamily Science Nights would involve pre-service educators in the University of Texas at El Paso’s College of Education Block program in a series of community based workshops designed to increase students and parents understandings of basic science concepts. The pre-service teachers would deliver a series of experiments that children and their parents could do in their own homes, utilizing common and readily available household products. The workshop format would allow the pre-service teachers to focus on methods of inquiry within the activities and to develop pathways to establishing partnerships with the parents, students, staff and other community members that might attend the outreach effort. For example, pre-service teachers currently enrolled in the Teaching Science in Primary Grades (ECED/BED 4311) and the Teaching Science in Intermediate and Middle Grades class (MSED 4311) will be the groups that will lead the activities in the three community based workshops to be held at Alicia Chacon International School in the fall of 2005. These courses explore the methods and materials needed for teaching science in kindergarten through eighth grade, and includes the utilization of field experiences. Pre-service teachers in the class are required in to participate in a Community Outreach Activity.
