APA style with annotations

1.        Login to RefWorks

2.        Select Bibliography from menu bar.

3.       Select style to modify (in this case APA).

4.       Click on “edit” (to the right of the output style box).

**this launches the “output style editor”.

5.       In the “Name” box (not the “Style” box) rename the style (I named mine “APA with Notes”) and click the “Save as…” button. {note: first time, select Save as, after that, just use Save}

6.       In the “Citation type” box (under the “comments” box) choose – “In-Text Citations and Notes”

7.       In the “Reference Type” box select the reference types you are using (or modify all reference types that say “defined” next to them).  For example, if you are only using journal articles, you only have to modify journal articles.

8.       In the “Fields for this type” choose the Notes field and click on the “>” to add it to the “Output Field Order” box.

9.       Click on the Notes field that was just moved over to the “Output Field Order” box. “Field Settings” and “Field Comments” appear on the right; they allow you to include punctuation and spacing for you field.

If you want your notes to start on a new line below your bibliography entry with a blank line in between, enter “\n\n” in the “Precede with” box.

If you want your notes indented, enter “\t” in the “Follow with” box.

10.   When done editing all your reference types, click on the “Save” button at the top to save your changes.
