Executive Summary of My Community Problem Report

Breianna C. Russell (2010)

An important problem facing our community is that of Abortion and the choices that woman must choose to make. Related to that problem, the specific goal of this research report is to illustrate the fact that the argument of abortion has gone on too long. Religious and non-religious sides continue to disagree.  And the woman in our community need to be less criminalized and more supported since there are only two options after conception. The woman can either choose to give birth or she may choose to abort. Research and agency contacts indicate that the primary causes of this problem are lack of planning on the female or male's part, not using contraception or other precautionary protection, and a shortage of family and psychological support. Current data shows that the present magnitude of the problem in our community is for every 1000 young woman 135 or more will become pregnant and face the choices of abortion, adoption, etc. This is because they where either unprepared, unsupervised, or simply unlucky. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this problem  is that only about 74 of the 135 or more woman that become pregnant give birth, this leaves 54% of pregnancies left to end up as abortions or miscarriages.

The actual economic impact this has on our community is that since more and more births become imminent it will only mean more mouths to feed, more money to be spend and more time consumed. This is because a child is not an inexpensive venture. And in this case abortion and medical bills are not inexpensive either. This also means that these children that do become young adults will have to find jobs and procure educations in order to keep those jobs. The ongoing social impact of the problem is that woman who either become pregnant or who plan to abort their pregnancy are scrutinized, leaving them to feel ashamed in whichever choice they decide upon. Members of our community urgently need to give more attention to this problem because people they may know are going through this right now. And for every birth it will be one less job or one more person to feed and support. This report will be of particular interest to young woman and their partners in El Paso, and should definitely be read by anyone who could be pregnant, has a loved one that is pregnant, may have gotten their loved one pregnant, or even someone who may be planning to become pregnant. This pertains to parents as well, it is possible that this report with interest those who have children as well that are coming of age for sexual interaction.
