After reading Chapters 5 and 6, use Finale® music notation software (and an approved template), harmonize a descending chromatic scale from C5 to C4. Open Finale’s “Grand Staff.ftm” template. Submit this assignment by email or on a disk. Write the chromatic scale and its counterpoint: In 2/4 meter, in C major, write a descending chromatic scale from C5 to C4 in quarter notes. Use a half note for the C4 in the last measure. The example should be seven measures in length. In bass clef, write a 1:1 harmonization of the chromatic scale. Use chromatic pitches to imply secondary dominants, secondary leading tone chords and Neapolitan chords. In the next seven measures, write a 2:1 harmonization of the chromatic scale. Write 4:1 (third species) counterpoint: Write a four-measure melody (cantus firmus) in common time, in a minor key using quarter notes (half notes at 2.3 and 4.3). Write a 4:1 counterpoint, using sixteenth notes. Include and label NHTs. You do not need to label all intervals. Avoid steps followed by leaps in the same direction. However, consecutive stepwise motion may or may not change direction.
