Using Finale's Instrumental Trio template, compose the following three-voice example of tonal imitation:
  1. This piece will be eight measures in length.
  2. Write this piece in a major key.
  3. Compose a two-measure subject in treble clef that ends on the dominant on the downbeat of measure 3.
  4. Beginning in measure 3, write a tonal answer to the subject in the second treble clef instrument. The answer should end on the tonic on the downbeat of measure 5. The top voice now has a counterpoint to the answer using longer note values.
  5. Beginning in measure 5, the subject returns in the third voice at the original pitch, but in a lower octive (in bass clef). The second voice has a counterpoint similar to measures 3 and 4 of the top voice. The first voice should have something new.
  6. Measures 7 and 8 are a coda that ends the piece with an authentic cadence in the original key. The tonic harmony should occur on the downbeat of measure 8. Use thematic material from the subject for the coda.
