After reading Chapter 15, compose a subject to be used in your fugue, this semester's final project:
- You may choose either a major key or a minor key.
- The motive must be in common time and must be at least two measures, but no more than four measures.
- The key should be clearly defined by the first few notes of the motive. Be certain to include the tonic and dominant. The leading tone is also a good choice, especially in minor.
- It should follow the guidelines for a good melodic line:
- Leading tones go up to the tonic
- The subdominant is most effective when it goes down to the mediant, especially in major.
- Leaps are best when preceded and followed by stepwise motion in the opposite direction.
- The motive should end in such a way as to prepare the entrance of the second voice at the dominant.
