CHARLES FRANCIS LEINBERGER, PH.D.
Teaching Philosophy

Students learn best when given the means and the motivation to achieve clearly-defined goals.

Therefore:
  • The Means:
    • The instructor will teach all subject matter and assign suitable work necessary to meet the "Course Goal" and "Course Objective" stated on each syllabus.
    • The instructor will test on all subject matter for which the student is responsible.
  • The Motivation:
    • The instructor will supply some motivation in the form of grades earned on assignments, quizzes, periodic exams, and the final exam.
    • The student must supply the rest in the form of self-motivation.
  • The Goals:
    • The goal for all of my classes designed for music majors is the same:
      • To provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and skills needed for success in a career in music performance, education, composition, production, and business.
    • The goal for all of my classes designed for non-music majors is the same:
      • To provide the student with an awareness of the elements of the music that affects our lives everyday.
      • To provide the student with an understanding of music's history and how music affects, and is affected by, culture and events worldwide.
      • To enable the student to discuss with correct terminology how and why music contributes to a better quality of life.
      • To foster a life-long love of music and a desire to support music and all of the arts.

The above-stated philosophy is consistent with the Mission Statement of the Department of Music,
which can be found at https://www.utep.edu/liberalarts/music/about/about-us.html.
  • Produce excellence in music and its professions through opportunities for artistic expression, educational growth and high academic and artistic standards.
  • Provide an enriched environment that supports musical participation, enjoyment and study.
  • Build solid foundations for students seeking careers in music education, performance, or composition.
  • Create an environment for continued development of teachers and music performers.
  • Strengthen and support the music professions, including music education, performance, composition, research, and all activities that foster intellectual innovative and artistic growth.

And the Vision and Mission Statement of the College of Liberal Arts,
which can be found at https://www.utep.edu/liberalarts/about/vision-and-mission.html.
  • In addition to offering Liberal Arts majors and minors high quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the College of Liberal Arts is committed to providing excellent educational opportunities to all UTEP students. College faculty are dedicated to providing students with access to intellectually stimulating instruction and creative activities in the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and the arts.
  • The College of Liberal Arts will continuously develop individual and collaborative scholarly research projects and creative programs that positively contribute to the academic life of the College and enhance the lives of UTEP students, faculty, staff and the general public.
  • The faculty are also committed to capitalizing on the scholarly opportunities presented by our bi-national, multicultural region, but will not restrict focus to issues that are only of regional concern. Rather, the faculty are dedicated to drawing on the unique characteristics of the El Paso region and population that offers many opportunities for exciting bi-national and multicultural creative activities and can serve as a "natural laboratory" for advancing scholarly research that is of national and international significance.

And the Mission Statement of the University of Texas at El Paso,
which can be found at https://www.utep.edu/about/utep-vision-mission-and-goals.html.
  • UTEP is a comprehensive public research university that is increasing access to excellent higher education. We advance discovery of public value and positively impact the health, culture, education, and economy of the community we serve.
