A Brief History of Angelic Touch Medical Mission International Godwin Udo and his wife Regina Udo are originally from Nigeria, and even though they live and work in the USA, they visit Nigeria on regular basis. During their visits, they often travel the rural communities to observe the destitute conditions of the residents who do not get any help whatsoever from their government or international organizations. Each visit, Godwin and Regina tried to respond to the needs of these people in whatever little ways they could. In July of 1997 they went on a trip to Nigeria again but this time in a more organized and determined manner. As a nurse practitioner, Regina went with as much medication as she and Godwin could carry in their suitcases. She spent four weeks teaching the rural residents on health and hygiene issues and treating their diseases. As a college professor, Godwin spent his days conducting workshops and his evenings teaching and preaching the bible. Their efforts were so visibly productive and were so appreciated in 1997 that the couple decided to go back to repeat their efforts in 1998 and 2000. The magnitude of the needs in the rural communities became so apparent with each visit that the couple became convinced that two of them could not effectively help the people. They began to inform their friends and co-workers about their experiences in the Nigerian villages. In 2001, the most successful trip to date, was made with three additional health workers from the USA including a student nurse, a physician assistant, a family nurse practitioner. The 2001 trip lasted for two weeks during which, the team treated hundreds of sick people from several villages. The team went with boxes of medication which were donated by various pharmaceutical companies. They stayed at the ATMMI quarters which were built by Godwin and Regina during several of their previous visits. Some members of the team also taught and preached on evenings and Sundays in the local churches. The community leaders showed their appreciation by giving gifts to the team and by organizing a local dance group to perform. In 2001, due to their overwhelming experiences, the team unanimously decided to come back to the United States and form a not-for-profit tax-exempt organization by which more volunteers and donors can be recruited for the different needs of rural residents in Africa and the world at large. In September of 2002, tax exempt status was granted to Angelic Touch Medical Missions International, and now we are pressing forward, ready and willing to do the Lord's work in full. |
