In my discourse community map I decided to use Alpha Xi Delta, my place of employment (Painted dunes golf course), and School as my three types of Discourse communities. In this map I described the typical genres, the norms for the genres, and the writers’ tasks and goals for each community.

In order to become an alpha Xi delta Women’s Fraternity member one must maintain a meet a standard GPA, get along with the active members, and go through the pledging process. Alpha Xi Delta (Iota Eta chapter) usually gathers every Monday at 7 P.m. in the liberal arts building. Not only do we hold meetings for our chapter but every chapter nationwide holds meetings at certain times and places. There is also a National convention that is held every year at a particular place where all of the girls from each executive board in each chapter meet and discuss Alpha Xi issues. During meetings we discuss things that should be done for our chapter and also set our goals. Our main goal/slogan is inspiring women realize their potential. In order to be an organized organization we use specific genres that make all of our lives easier, the genres include: Meetings, E-mails, Text Messages, Phone Calls, The Gin System, The Quill (our national magazine), Face book, MySpace, Twitter, and our monthly Calendar.  In our sorority we have codes, secrets, and our own languages that are for members use only. These so called “codes” enable us to keep what our founding mothers have kept so secret for so many years, they also allow us to be able to build a bond not only between the sisters in the chapter but also nationwide.

At Painted Dunes golf course we set our goals high. Our main goal is customer satisfaction. In order to achieve customer satisfaction we have to be able to communicate efficiently with one another. At the golf course there are bulletins and schedules for the employees. In the bulletins there are different items ranging from goals to jokes to make us start or day off well, happy employees= more sales. We also communicate through e-mails, phone calls, MySpace, face book, and text messages. In order to be a part of our staff there are several requirements that a person must have to have. They must be at least 18 years of age, they must be outgoing, and they must be a hard worker.

My last community that I wrote about was School. I attend UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso). In order to get into UTEP a student must have a certain GPA, must have taken their SAT, and must be a high school graduate. Here Students learn specific things that enable then to be sent off into the working world. In order to keep in touch with our professors, schoolmates, and the school there are certain types of genres used. These genres include phone calls, e-mails, school website, text messages, Face book, MySpace, and our own UTEP account. Using these genres help each student become successful during the period of our schooling.
