How to insert title blocks and notes into your Drafting Sheet

Here we will show you how to insert title blocks, text and notes into your Drawing Sheets. These are needed to define the part number, tolerances, drafting standards, material and finish specifications, part revision, etc.

First you need to have a part file with a Drawing Sheet available. If not do so now. Also, note what size paper is used by the Drawing Sheet. Currently we only have title blocks for A, B, C, and D sized drawings (no metric title blocks yet).

Basically this process consists of the following steps.

  1. Insert the title block pattern
  2. Import the editable text for the drawing blank
  3. Edit the text part for the drawing blank
  4. Insert and position the UTEP logo jpeg for the title block
  5. Import, position and edit the notes part into the Drawing Sheet
This might seem like a lot of steps, but once you do it once or twice you will find that it is not so bad. You will need the following files, which should all be in the default pattern directory if you are on a UTEP machine. If you are working on a computer that is not in one of the computer labs these files might not exist. They are not part of the NX distribution, but added after the installation. You can contact Rudy Aguilar if you wish to install these files on a computer.

OK, Let's get started. Next we will detail the five steps outlined above.

  1. Insert the title block pattern. This will add the line for the title block at the boarder of your Drawing Sheet. You will not be able to edit these lines.
    1. Format->Pattern (from the top menu bar)
    2. Select Retrieve Pattern, in the Patterns window
    3. Select OK on the Retrieve Pattern window
    4. Select the FORMAT_MECH_X.prt, and OK pattern that corresponds to the size of the Drawing Sheet
    5. Select OK from the Enter Pattern Name window
    6. Select OK on the Point Constructor window, all the title blanks are to be positioned at the (0,0,0) WCS
    7. You should now see the title blank on your Drawing Sheet. If so select Cancel from the Point Constructor window. If not try try again.
  2. Import the editable text for the drawing blank. This step will add text to the title block that you can edit. This will have regions to define the part number, name, drawing scale, revision level, etc.
    1. Select File->Import->Part from the top menu bar
    2. Select OK from the Import Part window
    3. Select FORMAT_MECH_X_TEXT.prt, and OK from the Import Part window corresponding to your Drawing Sheet
    4. Select OK on the Point Constructor window, all the title blanks are to be positioned at the (0,0,0) WCS
    5. You should now see the some green text added to the title blank on your Drawing Sheet. If so select Cancel from the Point Constructor window. If not try try again.
  3. Edit the text on the drawing blank
    1. Double click on the text that you want to edit and the edit the text in the pop-up window.
    2. You should change all the text blocks.
  4. Insert and position the UTEP logo jpeg for the title block. This will simply add a fancy looking UTEP logo into the title block. You will need to position this into the upper left block in the main title block area (in the lower right of the Drawing Sheet).
    1. Select Insert->Image from the top menu bar
    2. Select FORMAT_LOGO.jpg, and OK from the Open Image window
    3. Position the logo into the upper left block of the main title block by selecting the somewhere in the white background of the image
  5. Import, position and edit the notes part into the Drawing Sheet. The notes are typically added to the lower right area of the drawing area of the Drafting Sheet. The notes are useful for specifying materials, finish, secondary operations, etc for the part.
    1. Select File->Import->Part from the top menu bar
    2. Select OK from the Import Part window
    3. Select NOTES.prt, and OK from the Import Part window corresponding to your Drawing Sheet
    4. Select the Cursor Location option from the Inferred Point block of the Point Constructor window. You will need to manually position the notes to where the fit best on your drawing.
    5. Click on the location where you wish to insert the notes into your drawing. You can always reposition them later.
    6. You should now see the some green text added where you clicked. If so select Cancel from the Point Constructor window. If not try try again.
    7. Double click on the note text and edit and edit the text in the pop-up window.
That should just about do it.
