Resources for English and American Literature
Electronic Databases
MLA (Modern Language Association) International Bibliography is the major source for literature and language. It includes essays in books as well as all the major journals in linguistics, language study, literary theory, and literary criticism. You can search it by keyword, author, title, and subject. The database provider is Ebsco, so it has all the features of Ebsco products, such as personal folders, full text articles, and downloading and emailing capability.
Gale Literary Databases provides online access to all the many series published by Gale, such as Contemporary Authors and Contemporary Literary Criticism. We have some of these in hard copy, but the electronic version allows you to search all the series at once. This is the place to start for biographical and critical information on authors and particular works. You can search by author, title, century, country, or genre to find full text articles that you can download, print, or email.
Early English Books Online provides facsimiles of English literature from the 15th-19th centuries. It includes translations into English of books in other languages, so it's worth checking for classical literature and patristic works. You can search by author, title, or keyword, and you can sort results.
Inter-Play allows you to locate plays in collections, as well as separate publications. It is searchable by author, play title, and collection title, but not by subject.
Print Resources
Granger's Index to Poetry is an important resource that is not yet available online. You can find a particular poem by author, title, subject, or first line. Find it in the Reference section at PN1022.G7.
