COURSE INFORMATION
Description:An upper level course which exposes the student to a wide variety of traditional and contemporary analytical and compositional topics. Intended for theory/composition majors, but may be taken by all upper level music students.
May be taken for graduate credit with the approval of the graduate music advisor. Graduate students are also required to present a Sonata Form Project during class on Monday of Week 15. The instructor will assign a sonata-form movement from a Mozart piano sonata, string quartet, or symphony. Graduate students will prepare a chart of the movement and present a 30-minute lecture during class. The lecture will include descibing formal, thematic, and harmonic details of the movement and will include listening to a recording.

COURSE GOALS, OBJECTIVES, OUTCOMES, ETC.
Course Goal: To provide the student with the theoretical knowledge and skills needed for success in a career in music performance, education, or composition.
Course Objective: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand and appreciate the musical forms of the period of common practice which are evident in Mozart's works;
  2. Understand and appreciate Mozart's use of chromatic harmony and modulation within those forms;
  3. Begin understanding Mozart's musical vocabulary, the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, and formal devices he uses repeatedly;
  4. Begin understanding the ingenuity and humor that Mozart consistently incorporates into his music.
GRADING
The final grade will be calculated according to the following point values:
24 Assignments 25 points each 600 points 60% of final grade
Midterm Exam 1 100 points 10% of final grade
Midterm Exam 2 100 points 10% of final grade
Final Exam 200 points 20% of final grade
Total Points Possible 1000 points 100% of final grade
Letter grades will be assigned based on the total number of points earned. The instructor may assign a higher (or lower) grade based on the student's effort and rate of improvement throughout the semester. A grade of "W" will be assigned only if a student drops the course before the Course Drop Deadline, which is the Friday of Week 10 (April 3, 2009).

B 800-899 points 80.0-89.9%
C 700-799 points 70.0-79.9%
D 600-699 points 60.0-69.9%
F 0-599 points 0.0-59.9%
W A grade of "W" (Withdrawal) will be assigned only if a student drops the course before the Course Drop Deadline, which is the Friday of Week 10.
IA grade of "I" (Incomplete) will be assigned only if the student provides documentation for a situation that prevents him or her from completing the requirements for a passing grade. These situation include, but are not limited to, hospitalization, incarceration, and military deployment.

The following policies apply to this class:
  1. Come to class on time and prepared.
  2. Assignments are due every class meeting at the beginning of class.
  3. Some listening will be done in class, but the student is responsible for all listening assignments.
  4. The Midterm Exams will be during class on Wednesday of weeks 5 and 10.
