My name is Melissa Lozano and will be teaching for the first time this year. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, in May 2005, with a Bachelor's of Interdisciplinary Studies in Education. Ever since I was in fifth grade I knew I wanted to grow up and be a teacher. So now that I am about to teach, ...does that mean that I have to grown up? I am pursuing a Master's Degree as an Instructional Specialist in Science Education. After that, I may continue in my journey for education and obtain a Doctorate Degree.

I have always loved science but never knew how to quite put my love for teaching and my love for science together until one day I thought to myself, "why don't I teach science!" Brilliant!

I am a 7th grade science teacher as well as a cheerleading coach for Nolan Richardson Middle School. One goal for my first year teaching is break the stereotype that only boys are good at science because hey, I am no boy!

My philosophy for teaching is: to facilitate learning in a harmonious balance that will allow students to take an active role in an inquiry based learning environment. With the use of manipulatives, modeling techniques and innovative lessons, I will promote a successful learning environment. I am a strong believer in the constructivist theory that indicates that students learn through hands-on experiences. When students learn this way, the ideas and concepts are adhesive and promote higher-order thinking. I also believe in equity among my students. All students have the right to a high-quality education that I will provide. I believe that education holds the key to any future.  I hope to instill this belief into my future students.

Special Thanks

I would like to thank my husband for all the love and support he has given me. Without him I would still be serving tables.

Thank you to my mom for the encouragement throughout the years.

Thanks to my dad for his philosophical words of wisdom.

And Thanks to my bro for stimulating my imagination.

Last but not least, Mrs. Flores for putting up with my juvenile behavior in 5th grade and giving me the aspiration to be a great teacher like her.
