El Paso - Forgotten City or Hidden Treasure

This will be a 3 week unit of study focusing on the Science in and around the El Paso Area. Each week, the students will examine a fundamental and essential question:

  • Week 1 - How is El Paso a rich science environment?
  • Week 2 - How does Earth Science impact El Paso?
  • Week 1 - Is El Paso a Forgotten City or Hidden Treasure?

Students will undertake this investigation in a variety of activities that address these fundamental questions and tie directly to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) appropriate for each grade and level.

TEKS

Chapter 112. Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science Subchapter A. Elementary
Statutory Authority: The provisions of this Subchapter A issued under the Texas Education Code, §28.002, unless otherwise noted. 112.1. Implementation of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Science, Elementary.

Activities

The tasks address the goals of the program by engaging the student/teacher teams in research, critical thinking, communicating thoughts, and making connections. The benchmarks also provide a mechanism for assessment, both for the program coordinators and the classroom teachers. Each task builds upon previous skills and knowledge bases which allow the student/teacher teams to construct meaning from seemingly unrelated material. Each task addresses the interaction among the following domains: Science, Mathematics, Technology, Social Studies, Language Arts, Art and Reading
